Gilt City - Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve taken classes with you before, can I still purchase and use a Gilt City Deal?

Unfortunately, no, those deals are only for students who have never taken classes with us before.

What classes will be available to me?

Gilt City customers are welcome to take any Introductory or Beginner Level class. If you haven’t danced before, we recommend that you register for at least one Intro level class before jumping into a Beginner class.Click here for the schedule.

Is the voucher redeemable for private lessons?

Kind of. The discounted/promotional value of the Gilt City voucher is only valid for use in group classes (see the calendar for classes that are available to you), but you can apply it towards the full price - $90 - of a 40-minute private lesson.

  • If you paid $25 for your voucher, a private lesson would cost an additional $65.
  • If you paid $50, a private lesson would cost an additional $40.
  • If you’ve already used some of your classes, we’d pro-rate your remaining classes and apply that credit towards the full price - $90 - of a private lesson.

Do I need special “dance shoes”?

No, just a second pair of shoes to dance in. There are a lot of barefoot dance classes taught in the space and street shoes tend to track in little bits of rock and glass.

Does my voucher expire? And what exactly does that mean?

Yes, your voucher can and will expire. The expiration date can be found on your voucher. You have to take all of your classes by that time to take advantage of the full discount.

Oh no! My voucher is expiring soon and I won’t be able to get all my classes in!

Fear not. The promotional value of your voucher is good as long as we’re in business. Basically, you’ll have a credit towards the full price of our classes - after the expiration date, you’ll just have to pay an additional charge when you come in to take class - see below:

  • Each class on your voucher is worth $6.25, so you’d get a $6.25 discount on the normal $11/person rate. You’d end up paying just $4.75/person for each class you take after the expiration date.
  • If you’ve already taken some classes, after the expiration date, the same prorating outlined above will apply to you.
Alternatively, you can apply whatever value you have remaining to the full price - $90 - of a 40 minute private lesson.

So, how will things actually go down once I try to redeem my voucher?

Though it’s not required, we recommend that all new students register for and attend an Introductory level class. In this class, you’ll learn the basic elements common to all Ballroom dances that we’ll draw on in the Beginner level classes. After registering for, and taking your first Introductory level class, you won’t have to register for any of your remaining classes. You can just drop into any Intro or Beginner level class that fits your schedule.

Why are there so few dates available for registration?

The dates available are for our Intro level classes. We recommend that new students come to at least one Intro class before attending Beginner Level classes. You’re welcome to just jump right into Beginner classes, but in our experience many students that do this have a little bit of trouble keeping up, but if this doesn’t bother you, jump right in! No need to register for Beginner classes. Just show up with your voucher. Gilt City customers cannot attend any Bronze classes or Intermediate Level classes.

What exactly is a practice party?

It’s a chance to practice what you’ve learned in a realistic environment - other people will be on the dance floor doing different steps and you’ll be improvising and making choices.

I’m only interested in working on 1 dance, but I see that you only offer classes in it 3-4 times per month.

We try to cycle through all dances once per week, but the reason we switch dances so often is that it makes you a better, more versatile dancer.

For example, if you only wanted to learn ChaCha, you could attend only ChaCha classes until you used up all your Gilt City classes, but you’d only learn 3-4 steps in doing so. On the other hand, if you attended 2 ChaCha classes, 1 Rumba class, and 1 Mambo class, you’d learn 3 times the amount of steps while being just as good at ChaCha.

Learning additional dances isn’t only easy, it’s simply the presents the most value for your money and your effort.

I’m seeing a lot about your New Student Special on your website, can I use my voucher towards this?

Unfortunately, the discounted voucher is only valid towards Group classes. However, you could apply the value of your voucher towards the full price - $90 - of a 40-minute private lesson.
